General FAQs

  • I'm located in the Golden City, MO area! Typically I shoot outdoors, in a studio, or in my clients home. I have a handful of select locations that I love or we can brainstorm ideas together!

  • I shoot all outdoor photos during Golden Hour. This is key to getting your photos to have those magical, whimsy, and beautiful photos full of warm light and sun flares. This magic hour usually starts one hour before sunset. That is around 7:00pm in the dead of summer, and 4:00pm in the middle of winter.

My studio sessions typically start between 10am-3pm.

  • You will receive digital images sent to you via a link where you can download your photos. Most Importantly - please keep in mind what type of photos you are looking for before booking with me! It is important to know that my sessions are not traditional and overly posed. Please, please, please keep in mind that most of my photos are candid, unposed, and beautifully raw, real, and genuine.

  • All sessions are around 45 minutes, except for Senior sessions and any newborn package. Please refer to my investment guide to look at session times for those two types of sessions.

  • I try to make my family sessions laid-back and fun! Let go and ENJOY! We will have the best chance of getting amazing images if we let them happen naturally (with a little guidance of course.) I always take a photo of everyone looking at the camera and smiling, but it's the ones where you are interacting with each other and forgetting the camera is even there that are what I'm looking for. In fact, 85% of our session will be spent NOT looking at the camera! Relax and have fun!

  • ABSOLUTELY!! Please do! Bring your dog, cat, horse, bird, chinchilla, whatever your pet may be! I'd love to include them in the photograph.

  • I LOVE getting to know my clients kids, even the ones who are stubborn/onery/shy you name it! I'll love 'em! I always approach the session as a new friend who is just there to play and have a good time. I have all the patience in the world! With that being said, not every moment of the session is going to be perfect, and that's OK - in fact it's encouraged! I love the candid photos more than anything. In 10 years, I'm willing to bet that you'll cherish the images of your toddler crying fake tears just as much as the one we took 10 second later of them happily running toward the camera. My goal is to capture personalities of the kids in front if my lens, including all the beautiful quirks, details, and small moments that make up childhood.

  • You have the right to reprint images whenever and wherever you want...forever!! However, you may not sell your images for profit without written consent from Copper Oak Photography.

  • No, I do not! I eliminate duplicate images, missed focus shots, shots with bad expressions and any other image that may dilute the overall product delivery. For example, because I usually shoot with a lower aperture, sometimes I take a few extra shots to guarantee that I hit the focus that I am looking for.

I believe in quality over quantity and I hand edit every image. With my work, you will not see a batch edit with a filter thrown on. I hand edit each individual photo one-by-one!

  • After you book a session with me, we can work together on deciding on the perfect outfits for your photos if you need help!

I also offer a client closet - a wardrobe hand selected by myself of pieces for you to use ranging of many different sizes, styles, and colors. If you don't see something you like we can work together to find something you do and I can add it to my closet. It is always growing!

  • I try to store files indefinitely, but do not guarantee the storage of images once the final gallery is delivered, and you have downloaded it, I remove it from my site. Please store your images in a safe place! If you need to get back into it at any time, that is not a problem at all. I can get your gallery reuploaded for $60.

  • My typical turn-around time on photos is 6 weeks. I believe in quality over quantity and I hand edit every image. With my work, you will not see a batch edit with a filter thrown on. I hand edit each individual photo one-by-one!

  • I do not. I want my photos to always reflect my skills and editing style. For this reason I do not give out RAW or unedited files for any reason.

  • Booking Fees: A $50 retainer is due at the time of booking. This is NON-REFUNDABLE. No Exceptions. This fee covers initial communication, all planning, location hunting, and block off a specific time frame for your session.

Cancellations: If you need to cancel just let me know! The initial retainer fee is non-refundable, but you will not be charged any additional fees for cancellations.

Rescheduling: I totally understand that life happens! People get sick and things go wrong, no biggie! If you need to reschedule for any reason, please try to give a 48 hour notice.

We live in Missouri, so we all know how fast the weather can change. I keep a number of backup dates open each month in case of bad weather.

  • Just you and your loved ones! Or in some cases just you!

I have all kinds of props and blankets. You don't have to bring anything unless you have certain items you'd specifically like photographed. Some clients bring handmade blankets or quilts, items embroidered with babies name, a special chair, or a meaningful family heirloom.

  • Would you believe that EVERYONE tells me this, and it never turns out to be true! I like my sessions to be relaxed and fun, you'll look fabulous, I promise!

  • I love black & white images, I just do. When I am going through your gallery some images will just beg to be edited in B&W. If you want and additional image in B&W, just let me know! i would be more than happy to provide that for you.

  • If you would like locations on where to print your photos feel free to reach out! I do not recommend printing your images at Shutterfly, Target, Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, or Costco. These labs are not designed to handle printing professional photography. If you'd like more advice, please don't hesitate to ask!

Newborn / Maternity / Cake Smash FAQs

  • For those sleepy, swaddled baby shots, I recommend scheduling between 7-21 days old. However, I know that life happens and this isn't always possible! We can still create beautiful newborn images after 3 weeks; it just takes a little more time and flexibility.

  • I love photographing maternity sessions anywhere from 28-35 weeks. I find this is when you feel your best, and also have that belly bump.

  • It is best to get on my calendar when you are entering your second trimester, but please don't let that stop you from contacting me if you are past that time frame! Early is always ideal to ensure date availability, but I'm also very flexible on making time for clients who just didn't get a chance to schedule before baby arrived.

  • The majority of your gallery images include photographs taken of just your newborn. For example, I like to get details of tiny little feet, lips, that button nose and tuft of fluffy hair. In addition to the details, I'll also photograph your newborn with a few larger props (ex. bowls, baskets, beanbags, rugs, cushions, etc.).

  • Newborn sessions can take as many as 2-3 hours to ensure time for feedings and cuddles when needed. As long as baby is happy and sleeping, I'm able to finish almost all my sessions in 2 hours. But baby runs the show and I always listen to their needs. That means I always stop for nursing or feedings. Also, fair warning if baby gets those darn hiccups! Those can take a bit to resettle baby and get them to sleep again. I shoot until I have the images I feel I need!

  • Great question!

I pencil in due dates on my calendar and plan on a range of a week before and after that time. That means if your baby arrives a little early, I'm still available close to your due date. And if your baby arrives late I can still adjust for that week or two after your due date.

  • I have a few tips! Try to keep baby awake before so he/she is nice and sleepy. Feed baby when you get to my studio or I get to your home. Make sure this is a full feed, not a topper.

  • Of course! I love photographing you with your partner and children.

  • Usually an hour. I like to get some of the birthday boy/girl in a nice outfit, and then do the smash at the end. The smash itself is very fast, very fun, and very messy!

  • You bring the cake and the baby, I'll do the rest!
